The Power of Senses in Wiccan Practices

Now that we live in the age of smartphones and caller ID, anyone can look at a phone and know who’s calling. Before that era, however, some people seemed to have a gift for knowing when someone was about to call, and even who was going to be calling. If there was someone at the door, they would know who it was before opening the door. This intuition is a natural extension of our senses, and while it comes easily to some, it’s a power that can be practiced and enhanced by anyone.

Sometimes this intuition is obvious. For instance, if your dog barks whenever someone approaches the front door, then you’ll know someone is at the door before they ever knock because you’ll hear the dog start to bark. Likewise, if the dog simply sits and impatiently wags its tail when the neighbor comes over, you know the difference between a stranger at the door and when it’s the neighbor. This might seem obvious and mundane, but this intuition can be significantly more subtle. By expanding your awareness, you can begin to sense things by picking up on the subtle cues that precede them. Eventually, with enough practice and experience, this becomes subconscious, and you’ll develop a sense of premonition, aware of things about to happen without having to consciously watch for the cues.

Another way this sometimes manifests itself is the famous (and infamous) ‘aura’ that surrounds people, that some people claim to be able to see emanating from everyone. We’ll get into auras in a later lesson, but for now be aware that based on your own history and personal experiences, certain people you’ve never met will make you feel a certain way (for better or worse). When you experience this feeling, try to visualize it as a color or outline surrounding the person. You’ll find that you’ll tend to visualize the same colors for the same kinds of feelings, and even the energy or shape of your visualization may coincide with your perception of their mood and demeaner. Again, the trick to getting started here is awareness of both self and your surroundings. When those two merge, you’ll begin to understand how premonition works (and why sometimes it doesn’t or is often wrong).

Your ability to expand your awareness and take in your surroundings well beyond what is normally perceptible also works in the opposite direction. You can learn to project those senses outward, visualizing those events and projecting that intention outward to manifest your desires. A lot of Wicca is based around this idea and used to produce magical results.
